Statistics show that one in five girls in the U.S. feels negatively about her looks and that on a global level, only 11% of girls would call themselves “beautiful”. By the age of 10, 80% of girls worry about being fat. It is noted that girls benefit from positive female support, mentoring and socialization. From television to magazines, girls are told how they should look and the world sets very narrow standards for what is considered “beautiful”. We want to instill in our girls to value their unique beauty, raise their self-esteem, and realize their full potential. This program strives to help tween girls: To create positive attitudes towards physical appearance and body confidence that they will carry a lifetime. To prevent low confidence and self-esteem issues from affecting the futures of the young girls in our community. To condemn beauty standards that are hard to achieve and focus on ones self-worth and respect of self and others. To understand and tackle these key issues in order and move beyond the stereotypes.
